House System
Students from each of the three Junior High grades have been placed into one of the four "houses" not unlike the Harry Potter school Hogwarts. The crest for each house is shown above. There are students from each homeroom in each house to create four homogeneous groups. The placing of the students is one of my favorite days of the year. The energy is ELECTRIC! Students have an instant feeling that they belong to something and camaraderie begins between 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
Points will be earned each day for various reasons including but not limited to: behavior, responsibility, teamwork and games. Points will not be awarded or based on student grades. Teams which work together will scored more points. This promotes effort and attitude. Students WANT to do better.
At the end of the quarter the house with the most points has won a major award. We have rewarded an outdoor movie night, school overnight lock-in, an all day Saturday trip to Klondike park and even an overnight camping trip.
Some of my favorite things about the house system are students, especially new students, have instant friends. It is also amazing to see students help each other to be better. The results have been fantastic and students are more than excited!
