Classroom Management
Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, the Junior High Department will be implementing a new classroom management system and a new discipline system. This management system is based on the successful house system put into action at the Ron Clark Academy located in Atlanta, Georgia. A house system is implemented when a school, or a department is divided into sub units called houses, with each student being placed into a specific house. House systems:
At Incarnate Word, our house system will start with each student entering into sixth grade being randomly placed into one of the four houses. The four houses are titled: Amistad, Altruismo, Isibindi, and Reveur. Once the student is placed into a house in sixth grade, it will continue to be his/her house for the remainder of that student’s Junior High career at Incarnate Word. Since the house system encourages respect, responsibility, reliability, and teamwork, transfers to another house are very rare. The house system encourages students to own responsibility for their own actions and for the actions of their house-mates. It is our goal at Incarnate Word to guide our students into becoming mature, responsible, and respectful young adults. We believe that through this house system and its goals, we can achieve personal growth in every student.
In addition to implementing the new classroom management system described above, the Junior High Department will also be implementing a new discipline system. This new discipline system will have two parts to it:
As always, it is our goal at Incarnate Word to help our students develop into mature, responsible, and respectful young adults. This new discipline system allows our students to own responsibility for their actions and to create personal plans that will allow them to become more successful in the future.
We are looking forward to the start of a new successful school year with your children!

In addition to implementing the new classroom management system described above, the Junior High Department will also be implementing a new discipline system. This new discipline system will have two parts to it:
- IW Core Value Form: This form was designed for the student to fill out after he/she fails to meet one or more of the Incarnate Word Core Values. Students will fill out these forms by identifying and stating which expectation they did not fulfill. They will then create and document a plan to fulfill that expectation in the future.
- Infraction Form: If a student fills out three IW Core Value Forms, and a teacher notices a poor habit starting to develop, an Infraction Form will be sent home to the parent via email. Three Core Value Forms will result in an Infraction Form. This will be up to teacher discretion based upon the behavior(s) that a student has been demonstrating and other mitigating or aggravating considerations. After three Infraction Forms, the student will receive a detention, and parents will be notified.
